“I had no enmity with the people who assaulted me. They just called me and asked why I was sporting a mustache”, said Suresha Vaghela a 22 years old Dalit man in Ahmedabad who was attacked by his own villagers for sporting a handlebar mustache. According to police and FIR was lodged against six named and 4 unnamed men under the SC/ST Prevention of Atrocities Act at the Viramgram police station on Monday after the incident.

The victim was admitted to a hospital late Sunday night after he suffered a head injury in the attack and had to receive 4 stitches.  His sister was also injured and her arm was fractured in the process. The victim has been identified as Suresh Vaghela, a native of Karakthal village who is employed with Voltas in the Sanand GIDC area of Ahmedabad. The accused have been identified as Dhama Thakor, Kaushik Valand, Atrik Thakor, Sanjay Thakor, Anand Thakor, and Vijay Thakor, all residents of Karakthal village.

Vaghela in his complaint said that one of his villagers called him on Sunday night and asked why he was sporting a moustache. A few minutes after the call, 10 people came to his house with rods and sticks. The man was assaulted along with his family members and the attackers hurled abuses and casteist slurs on them. Vaghela was injured and later taken to the Shiv Hospital. Violence on the basis of caste or religion has become rampant across the country. Dalit girls are raped almost every day and the news of Muslim men being lynched comes up every now then. This incident, however, is of a different level where a man is attacked simply for growing and keeping a moustache. According to most reports only 3 people have been detained as of now by the local police authorities
